Everyday HVAC Maintenance Tips
Temperature control
Avoid switching the temperature setting on your unit too frequently or too drastically. Your home furnace or air conditioner does not work like your car AC and does not respond well to rapid changes. Don’t crank the heat up to 85 just because you walked in the door and haven’t had a chance to warm up, only to switch it back to the 70s when you get comfortable. Instead, set the thermostat to your desired temperature and wait for it to gradually reach that point.
Increase Airflow
The air in your home is heated and cooled based on overall movement. To help your heating and cooling system, use ceiling fans, or whole house fans to strategically move air and distribute hot or cool air more quickly. Also ensure there is nothing blocking your air vents. Remove drapes, furniture, toys, rugs or other household items that may block vents and make your unit work harder.
Keep the Sun Out
Use blinds and shades strategically throughout the day to block the sun. Keep your windows closed and keep the doors closed. This will minimize the strain of your unit and keep a comfortable temperature year-round.
Change the Air Filter
This is the number one recommendation from HVAC manufacturers and is the number one cause of system breakdowns. So be sure to change the air filters regularly.
